Kehua Digital Energy Advances Full-Chain Grid-Forming Energy Storage Technology, Empowering a More Stable Grid Future

The "2025 New Power System Construction & Equipment Upgrade Technical Conference and New Energy Storage High-Quality Development Forum," organized by the China Electricity Equipment Management Association and co-organized by China Energy Storage Network, was successfully held in Shenzhen on November 1415. Kehua Digital Energy participated as an invited speaker, delivering a presentation titled "Empowering Grid Stability: Grid-Forming Energy Storages Role and Multi-Scenario Applications in the New Power System." The speech provided in-depth insights into the core supporting functions and real-world applications of grid-forming energy storage, offering practical references for maintaining grid stability amid high penetration of renewable energy.


In recent years, grid-forming energy storage projects have progressed from demonstration and regional initiatives to large-scale implementation, establishing themselves as a foundational technology for building the new power system. Building on 37 years of expertise in power electronics, Kehua has developed advanced grid-forming energy storage technology by emulating the frequency and voltage behavior of synchronous generators. By integrating core algorithmssuch as the rotor motion equation and reactive power droop controlinto the converter control system, Kehua enables voltage source characteristics at the converter terminals. This innovation provides essential inertia and damping support to the grid, effectively resolving stability issues for renewable energy integration in weak-grid scenarios and significantly enhancing grid reliability.

 

Kehua has achieved several breakthroughs in grid-forming energy storage technology:

Grid-Forming Capability Across Full Product Series: Kehuas grid-forming PCS has passed all 15 grid-forming performance tests conducted by the China Electric Power Research Institute, covering key functions such as inertia support, primary frequency regulation, and black start. It is the first in the industry to complete full functional validation, laying a foundation for standardized and scaled application.

Minute-Level Black Start for 100MW-Level Plants: Kehua has achieved minute-level black start capability in large-scale energy storage power plants. Successful implementations in projects such as Pingtan (Fujian), Xinjiang, and Shenzhen Nanshan Thermal Power Plant demonstrate reliable performance and support rapid grid recovery.

Multi-Dimensional Adaptability to Diverse Scenarios: Kehuas grid-forming energy storage system delivers robust performance across strong, weak, and off-grid environments, with a minimum short-circuit ratio (SCR) as low as 1.015 and fault recovery within <100 ms.


Backed by its strong technical expertise, Kehua has also put these innovations into practice through a growing number of projects. The company has deployed over 400 grid-forming microgrid systems, with cumulative grid-forming energy storage shipments surpassing 3 GW. Notable reference projects span key regions such as Xinjiang, Tibet, Ningxia, and Inner Mongolia:

The Xinjiang Kezhou 300MW/1200MWh Grid-Forming Energy Storage Projectcurrently the worlds largest operational standalone grid-forming project using lithium iron phosphate technologyhas been recognized by the China Electricity Council as an exemplary case of innovation in electrochemical energy storage and serves as a national GWh-level benchmark.

The Tibet Ali 60MW/300MWh Standalone Grid-Forming Energy Storage Project operates reliably at 4,300 meters altitude and in extreme lows of -20°C, demonstrating product resilience in harsh environments and supporting renewable integration in high-altitude regions.

The Ningxia Minning 100MW/200MWh Hybrid Grid-Forming & Grid-Following Energy Storage Project utilizes a blended control strategy to improve ancillary service revenues and facilitate local source-grid-load integration.

The Inner Mongolia Tongliao 60MW/240MWh Grid-Forming Project supports both grid-forming and islanded operation, contributing to the development of integrated "source-grid-load-storage" systems and intelligent grid upgrades.
