Significant R&D Achievement! Kehua and SNERDI Successfully Developed China's First Class 1E Battery Charger and UPS Equipment for Nuclear Power Plant

On October 27, 2021, the comprehensive performance evaluation meeting of the major special project, "Development of Class 1E Battery Charger and UPS Equipment", for large-scale advanced pressurized water reactor and high-temperature gas cooled reactor nuclear power plants was held in Xiamen, China. After the joint efforts of Kehua Data Co., Ltd. (Kehua) and Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research & Design Institute Co., Ltd. (SNERDI), the major national science and technology special project, “Development of Class 1E Battery Charger and UPS Equipment”, is now successfully completed with many significant results. We successfully developed China’s first class 1E battery charger and UPS equipment that meets the requirements of large-scale advanced passive nuclear power plants, of which the technology and products not only fill the gap in the Chinese market but also lead the world.


In the third-generation large-scale advanced passive nuclear power plants, the Class 1E DC power system and UPS system (IDS) is the only safety-level power supply system, which is a crucial guarantee for the safety of nuclear power plants and the key link of the in-depth defense system. The core device of this system is the class 1E battery charger and UPS system. After the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the power supply guarantee capability of the control system of nuclear power plants under serious accident conditions has attracted more and more attention from the industry.

 

In 2019, Kehua cooperated with SNERDI to undertake the major special project, "Development of Class 1E Battery Charger and UPS Equipment", for “large-scale advanced pressurized water reactor and high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plants”. This project aims to complete the development of China’s class 1E battery charger and UPS equipment for the third-generation large-scale advanced passive nuclear power plants with independent intellectual property rights.

 

The project team has carried out in-depth research on isolation technology design, whole machine process design of the compact layout of nuclear power plants, heat dissipation layout design technology of heat flow simulation, highly demanding EMC design, application of voltage stabilizing technology of contactless voltage regulating transformer, anti-seismic design, highly reliable full simulation design, and other key technologies. Besides, we have conducted a number of EMC, anti-seismic, environmental experiments, and overcome many technical problems. During the implementation of the project, the project team obtained many Chinese patents and software copyrights, issued many technical secrets and enterprise standards, and formed more than 200 scientific and technological reports, appraisal outlines, and other documents.


It is gratifying that this major special project is successfully completed and yields fruitful results. The project team successfully developed the first-class 1E battery charger and UPS equipment in China that meets the requirements of large-scale advanced passive nuclear power plants, which filled the gap in the Chinese market and successfully won the bid for a large-scale advanced passive nuclear power plant project in China. This is another glorious achievement after Kehua won the bid for Hualong One nuclear power project, which demonstrates our unceasing efforts to the high reliability and safety of power protection.
